Cover up plants in early warm weather

With the unusually warm weather we’ve been having lately, bulbs and other spring plants are starting to grow. Yet we could easily have snow and sub-freezing temperatures in March, which could kill tender sprouts.

Help these little ones by covering them with pine boughs or mulch with autumn leaves. The shade will keep them cooler, so they will mature more slowly. For more gardening information, visit the Colorado Master Gardener Web site at cmg.colostate.edu.

Even if the temperatures may be warm enough now for some plants to start showing leaves above ground, March in the Rockies brings weather that can include snow and freezing temperatures. Photo by Courtesy of Brook E. Mark
