Musical Achievement

Plays flute in the Pikes Peak Middle School Honor Band, composed of 94 students from area schools. The students have to audition for the band, and about 300 try out each year, said Chuck Silloway, coordinator of the honor band. Aubrey was the only third-year member this year.

The band members, who receive music ahead of time, have only three practices together before the concert.

“It is a quite intensive rehearsal schedule to put together the concert in such a short time,” Silloway wrote in an e-mail.

Aubrey’s mom, Beth Frandsen, pointed out what an honor it is to be in the band. “It’s very interesting because it is so difficult to get in,” she said. “They are also exceptional students.”

Q&AHow do you learn a piece of music?

“I look through it a couple of times and see what looks hard, and I sort of go over that first. And then I go over the whole piece slowly and work at it until I get it the right speed.”

What’s your favorite school subject?

“I don’t know. I think all my subjects are sort of my favorite.”

What are your future plans?

“I’d sort of like to be a private flute teacher, and maybe go to Juilliard.”
