HE SAID, SHE SAID: Fantasy football
Everyone knows you should use studs such as Peyton manning, LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Owens, so here are projections for other players who might be off your radar.
These are the last picks for the football season, but check out The Gazette’s fantasy sports blog for info on other sports at gazettefantasysports.freedomblogging.com.
MATT WILEY’S PICKS
Quarterback Dan Orlovsky, Lions
The Detroit quarterback has passed for at least 200 yards in four straight starts and he has made an effort to get the ball to Calvin Johnson. New Orleans allows plenty of passing yards and this could be a shootout. Orlovsky could be this week’s Tarvaris Jackson (four TDs last week).
Running back Willie Parker, Steelers
If you are playing in your championship game, chances are Parker isn’t on your roster. If some owner dumped him out of frustration he could be a good pickup against Tennessee. The Titans are solid vs. the run, but Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch are out.
Receiver Braylon Edwards, Browns
The running joke is: Which is higher, the amount of fantasy league’s Edwards has been dropped in OR the amount of passes Edwards has dropped. Either way, the Browns will probably try to get him 1,000 yards so look for Edwards to get 163 yards in the next two weeks.
Sleeper Deshaun Foster, 49ers
As mentioned last week on the fantasy blog (gazettedev.gazette.com) Foster would likely take over for Frank Gore and put up decent numbers. He rushed for over 70 yards last week and caught five passes. If Gore is out again, Foster could be the difference between you winning your league’s trophy and having to listen to your victorious opponent for the next eight months.
Avoid Eli Manning, Giants
The loss of Plaxico Burress has hit the Giants’ offense and anyone who watched Jay cutler last week knows Manning won’t have time to pass.
ANGIE DISALVO’S PICKS
Quarterback Brett Favre, Jets
As expected, Favre has been sporadic throughout the season. But this week, the Jets travel to Seattle, which is last in the league in pass defense. And Favre’s potentially big game could make or break a fantasy championship win.
Running back Pierre Thomas, Saints
Since he took over as starter three weeks ago, in place of an ailing Deuce McAllister, Thomas has 223 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns. New Orleans’ matchup against Detroit, which is last in the league against the run, makes Thomas a must-start.
Receiver Kevin Walter, Texans
I finally learned my lesson about picking with the season-long trend Walter has been on – which means, if you haven’t been paying attention, that Walter will follow last week’s lackluster effort of two catches for 8 yards with a superb showing. And it doesn’t hurt that Houston’s opponent this week is Oakland, which surrendered four passing touchdowns last week.
Sleeper Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins
Brown hasn’t been stellar the past two weeks with 137 yards and no scores, but he’s averaged 5.3 yards per carry. That should pay off this week against the Chiefs, who are 30th vs. the run.
Avoid Chris Johnson, RB, Titans
Johnson has had an outstanding rookie season, but he’s struggled against all of but one of the four top 10 run defenses he has faced, averaging 40 yards and .5 TDs per game. That makes him a risk this week against Pittsburgh’s No. 2 run defense.
