Fantasy Football: He Said, She Said weekly picks

Everyone knows you should use studs such as peyton manning, LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Owens every week, so here are projections for other players who might be off your radar. Comment on The Gazette’s fantasy sports blog during the week at gazettefantasysports.freedomblogging.com and check out gazettedev.gazette.com for weekly video blogs.

HE SAIDQuarterbackJake Delhomme, PanthersIn his early meeting with the Falcons this season, Delhomme passed for a season-high 294 yards and two touchdowns. In nine career games against Atlanta, Delhomme has 12 touchdown passes. In a game that could decide a playoff spot in the NFC, Delhomme should have one of his best games of the season.

Running backJamal Lewis, BrownsCleveland’s leading rusher has yet to top 100 yards in a game this season and he hasn’t averaged better than 3.7 yards per carry in the past three weeks (3.6 on the season) but he should do better this week against Houston. The Texans have allowed a 100-yard rusher in each of the past three weeks and if the Browns get close to scoring, expect Lewis to punch it in.

ReceiverJabar Gaffney, PatriotsGaffney’s has scored only two touchdowns this season. One came in Week 3 against Miami (this week’s opponent) and the other came last week against the Jets. It seems like quarterback Matt Cassel is getting more comfortable in the offense after replacing Tom Brady and he is hitting his receivers and not just dropping the ball off to his running backs.

SleeperDerrick Ward, RB, GiantsThe backup might get the start, according to The Daily News, because Brandon Jacobs might need the week to recover. Ward is an excellent play if he starts against the Cardinals and should get more carries as the season goes on and Jacobs is saved for what many expect to be a deep playoff run.

AvoidBrandon Marshall, WR, BroncosOakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha did suffer a hand injury last week, but when he plays he is the best corner in football. He limited Carolina’s Steve Smith to one catch for 9 yards. He could hold Marshall in check.

SHE SAIDQuarterbackKyle Orton, BearsOrton had his worst game of the year last week, completed 13 of 26 passes for 133 yards. But it was just his first game back since spraining his ankle. He should be more mobile this week against the Rams, who are 24th (233.7 yards per game) in pass defense.

Running backWarrick Dunn, BuccaneersEarnest Graham’s ankle injury was defined as “serious” and possibly season-ending by coach Jon Gruden. Therefore, Dunn should get lots more carries the rest of the season, including this week against a terrible Detroit team that has the league’s worst run defense (171.5 yards per game).

ReceiverBernard Berrian, VikingsLast week Berrian had just three catches for 46 yards vs. Tampa Bay (fourth in pass defense) and no catches against Green Bay (third) the week before. But the Vikings play the Jaguars (18th) this week, so look for Berrian to get back on track. He’s also a good pickup since Minnesota plays Chicago (30th) and Detroit (23rd) the next two weeks.

SleeperRonald Curry, WR, RaidersThe Raiders will likely need to pass a lot to keep up with the Broncos, who beat Oakland 41-14 in Week 1. Although rookie Chaz Schilens might start over Curry for the sixth straight week, Curry still has the most receptions among active Oakland receivers. And he’s coming off his best performance of the season – six catches for 73 yards.

AvoidBrian Westbrook, RB, EaglesWestbrook had a great game (167 yards, two touchdowns) in his first week back from injury, but the past three games he has averaged just 49 yards per game and has been kept out of the end zone. Things won’t likely improve for him this week against Baltimore, which is ranked third in run defense.
