Fantasy Football: He Said, She Said – October 8, 2008
Everyone knows you should use studs such as Peyton Manning, LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Owens every week, so here are projections for other players who might be off your radar. Comment on the Gazette’s Fantasy Sports Blog during the week at gazettefantasysports.freedomblogging.com.
MATT WILEY’S PICKS
QuarterbackKurt Warner, CardinalsDallas has only one interception this season, and the past two weeks the Cowboys have given up four touchdown passes. This game could be the shootout of the weekend and Warner almost has emerged as a QB you should play no matter who the Cardinals are facing.
Running backRyan Grant, Packers If Grant is ever going to break out of his funk, it will be this week. The Seahawks are allowing 129.5 yards per game on the ground and 4.6 yards per carry. Add that Grant roasted the Seahawks for 201 yards rushing and three touchdowns in last season’s playoffs, and he is a strong option.
ReceiverAndre Johnson, TexansMiami has been great against the run, holding LaDainian Tomlinson in check and shutting down the Patriots. When the Dolphins have struggled, it has been against deep passes. Remember the game against Arizona? Look for the Texans to stretch the field with Johnson and exploit the Dolphins secondary.
SleeperVincent Jackson, WR, ChargersWith Chris Chambers likely sidelined and Tomlinson bothered by a toe injury, the Widefield High School graduate could be featured. The Patriots secondary has been better than expected, allowing 175.3 yards per game, but Jackson could have a big day.
AvoidDarren McFadden, RB, RaidersNumerous reports say running back Justin Fargas will return to the Raiders and the starting lineup. McFadden was suffering from a toe injury and it’s unlikely he will be the featured back until he is 100 percent.
ANGIE DISALVO’S PICKS
QuarterbackKyle Orton, BearsOrton has thrown for seven touchdowns the past three weeks, making him a good bye week option or backup. He ranks eighth in passing yards (220 per game), and Atlanta is 23rd in pass defense (221.6 yards per game).
Running backSteve Slaton, TexansThe rookie has scored a touchdown (three rushing, one receiving) every game since being named the starter. And after Sage Rosenfels’ disastrous fourth quarter last week and Matt Schaub’s terrible play all year, Houston likely will take a conservative approach against the Dolphins.
ReceiverLaVeranues Coles, JetsBrett Favre has improved exponentially the past two weeks and his receivers have been the benefactors. I wouldn’t expect another three-touchdown performance from Coles, but he and Favre obviously have developed chemistry.
SleeperAntwaan Randle El, WR, RedskinsBy now, you should know to start any offensive player against St. Louis. Randle El, Washington’s No. 2 receiver, also picks up return yards and, like last week, can throw the ball, too. And did I mention he’s playing against the Rams?
AvoidBraylon Edwards, WR, BrownsCleveland’s offense has been derailed all season and, therefore, its star receiver has been on a train to nowhere (11 catches, 95 yards, one touchdown). It’s unlikely the Browns or Edwards will get back on track against the Giants (No. 2 in pass defense).
