Coronado graduate honored by college

Colorado Springs native Kevin Moore is being rewarded for a successful college basketball career with an induction into the Ottawa University (Kan.) Hall of Fame on Oct. 17.

“My wife submitted a letter a couple of years ago and their committee took a look at it and here I am,” Moore said.

Moore said that his wife, Marie, will be in attendance at the banquet honoring him and another inductee as will the wife of his college coach.

The four-year letter-winner is fifth on the Braves’ all-time scoring list with 1,342 points and first in rebounding (939).

He was also a first-team All-Heart of America Athletic Conference his junior and senior year. Ottawa never had a losing season or finished lower than third in the conference during his time there.

He graduated in 1978, but his days on the basketball court were far from over. The 1974 Coronado graduate returned to Colorado Springs after college and spent more than 20 years teaching and coaching at a number of area schools.

“I got into education to coach,” he said. “But you never really realize how many lives you touch.”

He is chairman of the mathematics department at Cheyenne Mountain High School where he teaches alongside his sons who were also products of Moore’s coaching and steered him in another direction.

“When the boys were growing up and started playing basketball, we went to the Boys and Girls Club,” Moore said. “They were always looking for coaches, so I started volunteering with them.”

Moore also was a member of the Denver Barbarians rugby club, which won the national championship in 1990, and was a Western Union All-Star from 1985-90.

Moore has since stopped coaching, but has taken a more prominent role. He is a volunteer member of Colorado High School Activities Association’s 4A basketball seeding committee, which decides which teams qualify for the playoffs.

He is not shy about where his loyalty lies.

“I get to travel all over the state and pick which high school teams to go and watch,” he said. “I always want the Springs to do well in these state tournaments, I am one of their biggest supporters.”

Lauren Rosenthal, CSCS, ’06

At this time last year, Lauren Rosenthal was beginning her college volleyball career at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Rosenthal remains in the Sunshine State, but transferred to the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The change seems to be suiting her just fine as she recently was named the Conference USA Setter of the Week for the week of Sept. 22.

During a three-day span, Rosenthal averaged 13.6 assists per game, including 52 assists in a win against North Texas. Since entering C-USA in 2005, this is the first player of the week honors for the Golden Knights volleyball team.

The sophomore psychology major is no stranger to success. She was part of a Colorado Springs Christian volleyball dynasty that won three straight 3A state titles. The Lions went 90-3 during that span. She also holds a number of state records, including assists (3,286), assists in a season (930) and aces in a game (12).

Ellie Rudy, Palmer ’04

The junior from Woodland Park won her second straight NCAA women’s pole vault indoor title last winter.

Last weekend, she was named Indoor Field Event Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
