BEIJING • Sorry boys, no medals this time.

Fresh off bronzes in the team final, U.S. gymnasts Sasha Artemev and Jonathan Horton couldn’t rediscover the magic Wednesday in the individual all-around competition.

Horton, 22, of Houston, placed ninth after a near-collapse on pommel horse, and Artemev, 22, of Morrison, was 12th, doomed by a slip-up on still rings and an underscored horizontal bar routine.

Two-time defending world champion Yang Wei of China ran away with the gold, finishing 2.6 points ahead of silver medalist Kohei Uchimura of Japan and bronze medalist Benoit Caranobe of France.

Horton stood on the mat for 2 minutes before being granted clearance to start his pommel horse routine, then looked rough in a 13.675. He was steady on rings, maintaining his form before he stuck his landing for a 15.575.

The tide turned for Horton on vault, where height on his dismount and dazzling flips led to a 16.100. His score would have been higher if not for a hop on his landing.

More than a hop plagued Horton in a 15.275 on parallel bars. He had executed a near-perfect routine when his landing went haywire, his right leg falling behind his left. The same thing happened on the horizontal bar following an electric routine, and judges gave him a 15.350.

Horton closed with a 15.600 on floor exercise. He nailed his second landing and mixed impressive tumbles with consistent sommersaults.

Starting on rings, Artemev showed balance and smooth rotations but had a bunny hop on his landing for a 14.275. On vault, he posted his best score – a 15.975 – despite an awkward landing in which he almost injured his right foot.

Fluid rotations by Artemev on parallel bars were negated by a poor landing in a 15.200. He hopped after his feet touched the mat, then did it again, almost falling over.

Artemev assembled his most dynamic routine on horizontal bar, generating height and a picture-perfect landing. Judges didn’t see it that way, giving him a 15.075.

On floor exercise, Artemev scored a 14.625. He hesitated on a handstand and didn’t stick his final landing.

Like always, Artemev wowed the crowd on pommel horse. He worked for a 15.525, showing solid lateral movement and nice poise around the edges of the apparatus.
