One of the nation’s more accomplished divers, Troy Dumais doesn’t try to be a role model. He tries to be himself.   The two-time Olympian unknowingly has inspired many national team members, the same guys he will compete against at the U.S. Olympic trials that begin Wednesday in Indianapolis.   It’s easy to draw motivation from Dumais, a seven-time NCAA champion at the University of Texas who qualified for the 2000 Sydney Games and the 2004 Athens Games.   In 13 years on the national team, Dumais, 28, has amassed 25 national titles and five Pan American Games medals. He won silver and bronze medals at the 2005 world championships and the 2006 World Cup.   “I have fed off his experience,” synchronized diver David Boudia said. “Troy gives us that pep talk. He pushes us along and cheers us. That boosts our confidence and makes us feel like we’re at home.”   Said synchronized diver Thomas Finchum: “He has been around for many, many years. He has the experience and knowledge of what diving is about.”   Dumais maintains his leadership comes natural.   “I get to share what other athletes might not have experienced,” he said. “I wouldn’t like to be called a role model. I want to be everybody’s friend.”   Gymnastics trials    Colorado Springs residents David Durante, Joe Hagerty and Yewki Tomita will start competition Thursday at the U.S. Olympic trials in Philadelphia.   Hagerty finished third in the allaround and Durante was fourth last month at the Visa Championships in Houston.   Jurekovic to worlds    Colorado Springs cyclist Sam Jurekovic will begin competition Tuesday at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy. Jurekovic received an automatic nomination.   Wigger into Hall    Colorado Springs resident Lones Wigger Jr. will be inducted Thursday into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in Chicago.   Wigger competed in three Olympics as a shooter, winning two gold medals and a silver.   Cardona in action    Colorado Springs boxer Izaak Cardona will compete Tuesday through Friday at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Marquette, Mich. Cardona is fighting at 165 pounds.   USABA nationals    Colorado Springs goalball players Jennifer Armbruster, Asya Miller and Robin Theryoung will compete Thursday through Saturday at the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes National Championships in Salt Lake City.   They teamed for a silver medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens.   Equestrian event    The first leg of the Colorado Summer Classic Horse Jumping Grand Prix gets under way Wednesday in Colorado Springs. It will be held at the Norris-Penrose Event Center.   Oeinck claims silver    Colorado Springs triathlete Jasmine Oeinck won a silver medal June 8 at the Under-23 World Championship in Vancouver. Oeinck finished in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 2 seconds.   Lomong takes fifth    Lopez Lomong, a volunteer assistant with the Air Force cross country team, finished fifth June 8 in the 1-mile race at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore. Lomong finished in 3:53.97.   Springs runners excel    Colorado Springs runners James Garrett and Joshua Grubb competed June 8 at the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon in Denver. Grubb was 18th and Garrett 23rd.
