Area rodeo to be inducted into ProRodeo Hall of Fame

Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Days is back for its 68th year in Colorado Springs, July 9-12 at the Norris-Penrose Event Center. The rodeo, themed “Break from the Herd”, has also been recognized as one of the top rodeos in the land as a 2008 ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee.

“We are proud to have the rodeo honored in the hometown of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame as one of the best ever,” said Scott Bryan, president of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Board at a press conference.

This year, the rodeo has added a few attractions, including camel rides and bungee jumping for those seeking an added thrill. Returning activities include mutton busting and Native American dancing.

For anyone looking to get an early start, the street breakfast, from 5:30-9 a.m. June 25, will kick off the Range Ride. The cost is $5. The parade and street festival start at 7 p.m. July 8. The Hall induction will be July 12.

Continuing another rodeo tradition, much of the money raised will be donated to local military charities, a wish of Spencer Penrose that has benefited the military and their families since World War II. Several nights will revolve around military themes. The rodeo has already been responsible for more than $1 million raised.

Bryan was also proud to announce that this is the first rodeo to sponsor a “Wrangler, Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night to support breast cancer awareness.

Bryan stressed that the event will take place all day inside and outside the center for people of all ages.

Kids ages 3-8 will have the opportunity to take part in the Kiddie Dress-up Review on Saturday to compete for prizes with admission $1 for children under 12.

“We are encouraging everyone to get here early and stay late,” he said.
