MILO BRYANT: Give legs a workout with weight

We started with bodyweight leg workouts last week. We’ll finish those today.Don’t forget to go to the blog – milobryant.blogspot.com – to check out videos of each exercise. There will also be more exercises.Squat jumpsStart this exercise by standing erect with the feet slightly wider than your shoulders and toes slightly pointing out. Descend into a squat position with hamstrings roughly parallel to the ground. Ascend by thrusting the body skyward. Important: When landing, control it so that you can descend into the squat position again. Don’t land flat-footed. Don’t stop the landing, and then do another squat. This is a fluid exercise.LungesTo do this exercise, start by standing erect with your feet about eight inches apart. Step out about two to three feet in front of you with your right foot. Now lower your left knee until it’s about an inch above the ground. Step – don’t stutter – back to the start position. Repeat, stepping out with your left foot. Increase the intensity of this exercise by doing lunge squats. Start as before, but when you lower your knee, give it 10 repetitions, then step back. Repeat with the other leg.Bridging with leg extensionsLie on your back withknees bent and feet flat on the floor, knees and feet together. Now lift the pelvis off the ground such that there is a straight line from the knees to the shoulders. Without the pelvis sagging or movement from the shoulders, extend the right foot so that it makes the same straight line. Hold the foot out 10 to 15 seconds and lower it. Return to the starting position and repeat using your left foot. If there is considerable shaking, you have very weak glutes. The exercise can be intensified by adding ankle weights to each foot or by adding a weight plate or dumbbell to the midsection.Jumper’s squatsGet into the lunge position with the right leg out. Now bring the left arm up at a 90-degree angle in front of you and your right arm the same behind you. You should look like you’re in an exaggerated running pose. Now, without rising up, quickly switch lunge positions. Arms and legs both should switch. This exercise is better with a partner telling you when to switch. You should have between four and six seconds per switch. But if the partner wants to be mean, she could keep you in the lunge position for eight to 12 seconds before having you switch. We’ll finish up next week with advanced body-weight leg exercises.Contact Milo Bryant at milo.bryant@gazettedev.gazette.com or read his blog at www.milobryant.blogspot.com.
