Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help the city tackle thousands of potholes.With five, three-person crews standing by, your job is to let them know where the biggest, deepest axle-breakers are, or where the pesky little unexpected ones hide.The goal: Neutralize thousands of spots that flatten tires, throw frontends out of whack and undermine the integrity of the city’s streets.The crews, a combination of Colorado Springs and Rural Transportation Authority workers, will use hot-mix asphalt to fill new holes and ones patched temporarily this winter.Dubbed Pothole Week, the effort slated for Monday through Friday depends in large part on the cooperation of residents.”Citizens are our eyes and ears, and we want to hear from them so we can get the job done,” construction maintenance support manager Peg Richardson said in a statement.Residents are urged to call the city’s pothole hot line at 385-6808 or send an e-mail to streetdivision@springsgov.com.Callers should give the street name, nearby intersections, landmarks such as nearby buildings, the side of the street, the location in the street and the distance from the curb.Before voters approved a special sales tax to fund regional projects through the transportation authority in 2004, the city only tended to damaging or dangerous holes. The new funding, however, has doubled the city’s ability.Now, it tries to get to all reported potholes within 72 hours, 90 percent of the time.Since the authority kicked in, the city has filled more than 100,000 potholes, last year being the worst, with 57,830.If you choose not to participate, the city will deny any knowledge of your pothole.
