MILO BRYANT: Gauge fitness level before 3-day walk
Hey folks, it’s Q&A time again. So keep the questions coming.Milo,A friend and I are thinking about entering a threeday Walk for the Cure in mid-November in Arizona that involves walking 20 miles a day.We both work at Peterson Air Force Base and are allowed three hours of physical training a week. We walk about two to three miles a week. I’m interested in strengthening my muscles. How do we prepare for a 60-mile, three-day walk? Your recommendations will be greatly appreciated.Criss- OK, first we’re going to have to talk to Uncle Sam about that threehours-a-week thing. That’s just not working. I’m hoping that’s not the only time you have to train for this. But if it is, cool, we have time to get you two going in the right direction.First, we need to determine our walking fitness level. Meaning, how far we can we walk now and how fast we can do it.So, if there’s an OK from the doctor, perform a test. Walk for an hour and see how much ground gets covered. Divide 20 by that number and you’ll know how many hours you’ll walk each day. Can your body handle that much pounding three days in a row? Do we want to get faster? Or are we fast enough and want to get stronger? To become a faster and stronger walker, I suggest a cardiovascular- and muscular-endurance program. The cardio can come from walking a brisker pace, progressing toward walking with a weighted backpack. It can come from cycling, swimming, running and hiking. There are numerous body-weight exercises one can do to help the legs gain muscular endurance. I’ll write about lower-body body-weight exercises next month. So look for those columns and video blogs. Almost forgot: Hit up a runner’s store and get a good pair of shoes! That should be a good start for you.Bryant has two National Strength and Conditioning Association certifications.
