Sierra’s boys win by way of Dias’ day
Kelby Dias won three titles to lead the Sierra boys past Widefield at the Glenn Peterson Invitational on Saturday at the Air Force Academy. The depth of the Widefield girls carried them past Lewis-Palmer, 95-80.
Dias won the 110-meter hurdles by more than a second. He also won 300 hurdles and ran the lead leg on the winning 800 relay. He has not lost a race in the 300 since early last season.
“I just block everything out,” Dias said.
Stallions coach Teenan Anderson praised his team’s effort in the wind after it scored 114½ points to Widefield’s 98.
“There’s an internal strength among this boys team,” he said.
Widefield’s Patrick Richards won the 200 and 400.
Third-place Falcon won four events. Defending 4A state champion Keenen Ballage won the 100 dash and anchored the winning 400 relay team.
Dias was named the outstanding track athlete of the event. Rampart pole vaulter Josh McMillin set a meet record (14 feet, 1 inch).
The Widefield girls recorded 11 top-three finishes, including two titles.
Gladiators coach Fred Marjerrison was surprised to place second after not entering distance runners.
Joy Warrington set a meet record in the shot put (42-5). Warrington was named outstanding field athlete and Sierra’s Samantha Thompson track athlete. She won the 800 and set a meet record in the 1,600 (5:21.46).
Air Academy’s Allie McLaughlin set a meet record in the 3,200 (11:52.90), and Rampart pole vaulter Kelli Ehardt set a meet record of 12 feet.
