MILO BRYANT: Try out different exercises

There are a lot of us who want to get outside now that it’s starting to get warmer. And there are many of us who want to do some different exercises, too.

Well, here are a few.

Just remember, you asked for them.

I’ll break these into several types. Check out the blog for a visual of each. It’ll definitely help.

Spider-mans

An absolutely awesome exercise that works every muscle group in the body. Think of the movie “Spider-Man,” or a spider crawling up a wall. Well, we’re going to be spiders.

Get on all fours – hands and feet. With our rumps down and backs flat, crawl forward about 30 feet, turn and crawl back.

– Reverse spider-mans: These are the same as above. We’re just doing them backward.

– Lateral spider-mans: Some folks call these crab walks. Ahh, a beautiful exercise here. Assume the standard push-up position with hands close together. To move, spread out the right hand and right foot. Now move the left hand and left foot to bring the extremities together again. Do that for about 30 feet. Then move back to the left.

Walking downhill

This is about the easiest exercise I’ll ever describe. My clients love it! (Wink wink.) All we have to do is find a nice little hill, about 200 feet long with a 30- to 45-degree angle to it.

Then all we have to do is walk down the hill – about 10 times.

See, how easy is that? Walking down a hill 10 times! To take the boredom out of those 10 (did I mention downhill) walks, we can vary the way we walk back up. For instance, I recently had a client march up the hill. Then she shuffled on her right side and then her left. After the fourth grueling walk downhill, she backpedalled up the hill while in a nice crouched position. After the fifth descent she jogged 10 steps and walked 10 steps until she made it to the top.

Then she did it all over again.

Somebody has to give me some props on that one. Walking downhill not once but 10 times! What a great outdoor exercise.

Playground pull-ups

This is one Sven and I like to do. For those who don’t remember, Sven is my personal training buddy in San Diego. So, find a playground and use whatever equipment is there to do as many push-ups and pull-ups as possible in an hour.

It doesn’t matter what kind of push-ups – incline, decline, staggered, elevated, diamond, wide stance.

The pull-ups don’t matter either — wide grip, narrow grip, neutral grips, inverted, etc., just let imagination and the equipment rule.

Check the blog for a few ideas, if needed.
