Team tames wild horse
Staff Sgt. Denise Flory was on her way to work at Peterson Air Force Base Thursday morning when she heard on the radio about a motorcade for the bodies of a slain Fort Carson soldier and his wife.
Staff Sgt. David Dunlap and his wife, Whitney (Butler) Dunlap, were killed Jan. 14 when they walked in on a burglary at their Colorado Springs home.
This was no short jaunt for Flory, who wanted to pay her respects. Flory, 36, lives in Pueblo West.
Nonetheless, she changed her course, heading up Interstate 25 to InterQuest Parkway to salute the fallen soldier and his pregnant wife.
The day was dark, buried by clouds, as the hearses sailed by and entered the interstate at about 9:20 a.m.
“I think this touches everybody,” Flory said. “It was pretty senseless.”
The Colorado Springs police motorcade started at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at 3100 E. Platte Avenue, headed east to Powers Boulevard, then north to Interquest Parkway before linking up with Interstate-25.
From there, the bodies were taken by a private company to Denver International Airport, where they were scheduled to be flown to Arlington National Cemetery for burial.
A memorial was held for the pair Wednesday at Fort Carson, where Dunlap was stationed as a helicopter mechanic.
Macyo January, 17, was arrested Jan. 17 and charged as an adult with first-degree murder. A 19-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to first-degree murder and harboring a fugitive.
