A 59-year-old traveling Air Force variety show will make a stop at the Air Force Academy.

The Air Force’s Tops in Blue troupe will offer a free performance 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at Arnold Hall Theater, according to the Air Force Academy.

The performance — a novelty since its first world tour in 1953 — features about 40 active-duty airmen who sing and dance. They most recently teamed up with the cast of “Glee” for a performance at the 2011 Super Bowl.

Visitors are asked to enter via the academy’s north gate off Interstate 25. A bus will be provided to take people from the parking lot at the academy’s visitor center to Arnold Hall Theater, the academy said. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and it is open to the public.

AFA garners STEM awards

Eight people at the Air Force Academy — including six cadets — will receive awards on Thursday for their work in the fields of science, technology, math and engineering.

The Cadet Research Award will be among the honors presented Thursday at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio . A group of cadets worked on a project to lengthen the life span of aircraft parts.

The cadets include Sarah Collins, a sophomore; Henry Binzer, a junior; and Daniel Henning, Benjamin Hoff, Timothy Reid and Ryan Young, all seniors.

Randall Knize, director of the academy’s Laser and Optics Research Center, will receive the Outstanding Civilian Scientist of the Year award, while Capt. John Miller will receive the Outstanding Mid-Career Military Scientist/Engineer of the Year award.
