WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Michigan Army National Guard member helped rescue a motorist from a burning vehicle following a Lansing-area freeway crash that killed one and injured several others.

The crash happened Monday on Interstate 69 in Eaton County’s Windsor Township when a semi-truck plowed into stopped traffic. Staff Sgt. Samantha Mayne told WILX-TV that her car was among those hit, but she jumped into action. She said she didn’t have time to think.

Mayne credited her military training and maternal instincts for her actions. She spoke by phone with the driver’s wife and was told he’s recovering at a hospital.

Mayne had a sprained wrist, slight concussion and some bruising from the crash. She said she’s thankful that she was able to walk away from the crash.
