In case you’ve missed it, the last couple of days have been a period of major bird migration in Colorado and that migration is set to continue for a bit longer. According to Denver Audubon, it was previously estimated that 420 million birds would be migrating through the state between June 1 and the night of June 3.

While a night-time migration might seem a little odd, Denver Audubon notes that about 80 percent of migratory birds travel at night. Because of this, artificial lighting can be problematic when it comes to how these birds navigate, with light pollution tending to draw birds into the city and away from their intended path. When birds get drawn into civilized areas, they become more susceptible to threats like window collisions and outdoor cats, as well as exhaustion due to traveling additional mileage.

In order to help assist these birds in their travels, Denver Audubon has asked people to be mindful of using lights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., turning off all unnecessary lights both inside and outside of homes.
