Fishing derby
Tri-Lakes Lions Kids Fishing Derby will be held on June 4 at Palmer Lake.
The entry fee is a non-perishable food item for Tri-Lakes Cares. No fishing license is required. The derby runs from 8-11 a.m. with the awards being given at 11:30 a.m.
First, second, and third place awards are given for largest fish in each of three age categories. Prizes are donated by Bass Pro Shops.
Please bring your own fishing gear and bait. Educational fishing safety tips included.
Graduation fast facts
The Air Force Academy graduated its 68th class of cadets May 28 at Falcon Stadium, with Vice President JD Vance delivering the commencement address.
Here are some key numbers about the class of 226:
931 – total grads this year compared to 909 in 2025
1,071 – admitted students in 2022 for the class of 2026
3.21 – average GPA
Assignments (as of May 27) – 805, Air Force; 94, Space Force; 4, cross-commissioned; 4, Army; 4, Navy; 2 Marines.
13 – the number of graduating international cadets from Guyana, Jordan, South Korea, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Niger, Philippines, Senegal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Tunisia.
Book signing
Scott Graham will be signing his new book “Great Sand Dunes Massacre” from 12-2 p.m. on June 6 at Covered Treasures Bookstore.
“Archaeologist Chuck Bender knows he’ll be watched when he undertakes a survey of a contentious tract of land recently added to the Great Sand Dunes National Park,” a book promotion says.
Education accolades
- Luke White from Monument received a Bachelor of Science degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University.
- Shay Prichard of Monument was been named to the Chadron State College Spring 2026 dean’s list.
