Sheriff hosts events before farewell

Before Sheriff Jason Mikesell leaves office after eight years of serving Teller County, he will bid farewell during key events coming up.

First up is the Sheriff’s Open House where the community gathers to be part of what’s going on in law enforcement, emergency services and the nonprofit world.

Among the most popular events in a tour of the Teller County jail.

“They tell us they don’t want to break the law, but they want to see the jail,” said Lt. Renee Bunting, who coordinates the event.

For the first time, Flight for Life will be at the open house, along with the county’s emergency services, Teller County Regional Animal Shelter and the Red Cross. For kids, the open house features The Incredible Crash Dummies, games, hot dogs and hamburgers.

The 16th annual Sheriff’s Open House is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6 at the sheriff’s office in Divide.

Six days later, the Honorary Deputy Sheriff Association sponsors the Sporting Clays event with the Pikes Peak Gun Club. In August, the HDSA sponsors the annual golf tournament during Law Enforcement Week and in September, the nonprofit organization hosts the annual turkey shoot for ages 12 through adult.

The HDSA raises funds to fill gaps in the sheriff’s office budget.

“It’s the sheriff’s last hurrah,” Bunting said.

We keep paying for being the first | From the Editor

It usually not a good idea to be first. I was fervently against the legalization of medical marijuana in 2000. I was even more against the legalization of recreational marijuana in 2012. Most recently, I was against allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to sell recreational marijuana. I’m not against legalized marijuana. I don’t use it nor […]
