A lot of the students at Woodland Park Jr./Sr. High School are already very familiar with their new principal.

Woodland Park School District RE-2 announced that Katie Rexford has been selected for the position. She will assume her new duties on July 1.

Rexford currently serves as principal of Summit Elementary School in Woodland Park, a position she has held since 2013. She replaces Dr. Tory Richey, who held the position since July 1, 2024.

During her tenure at Summit, the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, one of four schools in Colorado to receive the designation during that recognition cycle, as well as a National Title I Distinguished School, according to a press release from the Woodland Park School District. The school also received the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award twice.

Rexford brings more than 20 years of experience in education, including leadership roles at both the elementary and secondary levels. Before joining WPSD, she served as assistant principal at Liberty High School in Academy School District 20 from 2009 to 2013. She also taught high school mathematics in Academy District 20 from 2005 to 2009.

“Throughout her career, Rexford has focused on supporting student achievement and creating learning environments that meet the needs of all students,” the press release said. “She is also known for building strong relationships with staff and fostering a ollaborative and supportive school culture.”

Rexford earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Canisius College in New York and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from the University of Phoenix. She also holds a Colorado professional principal license for grades K-12.

“Mrs. Rexford brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to students, staff, and families,” Superintendent Ginger Slocum, said. “Her leadership experience, collaborative approach, and dedication to academic excellence make her well-suited to lead Woodland Park Jr./Sr. High School.”
