Rose and the Thorn concert a benefit for symphony guild

As Woodland Park becomes a place to hear country music, the release of the Mojo CD album next month is another bonus for the city’s music fans.

Recorded in the Woodland Park home of Kevin Leis and Briggs Geister, Mojo is presented by Rose and the Thorn band.

“Our music is swampy blues/country,” said Leis, aka Thorn.

A benefit for the Ute Pass Symphony Guild, the concert features musicians who joined together to recreate the original album produced in 2025.  Many of the original band members have moved on.

However, one of the originals, Dave Sauer, will make an appearance at the concert June 7. Leis and Geister credit Sauer for his “Southern blues leads and licks,” on the album.”

For Leis, who has 47 years of experience in the music business, playing gigs all over the nation, gathering the band to recreate the album was an adventure in discovery.

It appears that musicians just seem to find each other

“We met Dan (Park) at the pawn shop here looking for speakers,” Leis said.  Turns out Park plays the guitar.

As word got around, they found the drummer, Roch Landaiche, in Cripple Creek, along with his wife, the vocalist Suzette DeBarros.

“At the Swing Factory Christmas concert, we met Rob Browning, who is now our bass man,” said Leis, lead vocalist who plays keyboard and percussion. Geister sings and plays the ukelele and guitar.

On a lucky break, they found Dalton LaFever, who plays piano and is a special guest of the band.  LaFever is one of the country music stars in America’s Mountain Festival July 11.

In Woodland Park, Rose (Geister) and Thorn played last year at the Friday Farmers Market and Sundays at the Aspen assisted living facility.

Rose and the Thorn concert is at 4 p.m. June 7 at the Ute Pass Cultural Center when the band will release Mojo on CD.  The doors open at 3 p.m.

For every ticket sold, 20% will go to the symphony guild.  For every drink sold at the bar, $1 will go to the musicians.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Briggs and Kevin whose band will be our opening act for the 45th annual July 4th Symphony Above the Clouds concert,” said Sherri Albertson, who chairs the symphony guild board.

Tickets are available at the door or by calling Albertson at (719) 650-4089.
