Road closure
Beginning May 18, Higby Road will be closed from Bowstring Road to Harness Road for a construction project. The projected reopening date will be Aug. 12.

Road reopening
The portion of Mount Herman Road that has been closed since May 3 is expected to reopen on May 16.
The U.S. Forest Service’s Pikes Peak Ranger District had closed five miles of Mount Herman Road to repair retaining walls and increase the safety on National Forest System Road 320 between its intersection with Red Rocks Drive to 320.A.
Snow totals
Monument got 4 inches of snow during the May 5-6 snowstorm, according to the National Weather Service reporting system.
Following last week’s snow, statewide snowpack has officially escaped record-low territory, though it’s still at just 25 percent of the norm for the date. Snow is expected to be gone from Colorado’s highest peaks in a matter of weeks, significantly ahead of schedule.
Estes Park led the state with 33.9 inches.
Colorado worst for auto thefts
A new study reveals that Colorado is the top state for vehicle thefts in the US.
The study, conducted by car comparison website Save Max Auto, summed all vehicle thefts registered between 2021 and 2025 from the FBI Crime Data Explorer for each US state and compared them to each state’s population (from US Census Bureau, Population Estimates Program (PEP) to find out where there have been the most thefts per 100,000 residents.
Colorado ranks first, with 2,852 vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents. This figure is based on a total of 167,648 thefts recorded between 2021 and 2025, compared to a population of 5,877,610. The average victim age in the state is 41.7. Data also shows that the most common location for theft is a garage or parking lot, where 36% of these incidents
Education accolades
- Monument resident Joel Blackburn graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing as a part of the spring/summer 2026 class, which included 1,399 graduates.
