A little more joy in the mountains | Guest column

High above the noise of bigger cities, tucked into the trees and fresh mountain air, something special happens each year in Woodland Park: Pride Above the Clouds.

If you’ve never been, it might surprise you. It’s not what people sometimes expect—it’s not loud or overwhelming. It’s friendly. It’s relaxed. It’s kids with painted faces, dogs happily tagging along, music playing in the background, and neighbors running into each other in a place where everyone is welcome to just… be.

That’s what makes it special.

In our small mountain town, community doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people show up—for events, for conversations, for each other. Pride Above the Clouds is one more way we do that—one more day where we choose connection, kindness, and a little extra joy.

You don’t have to know anyone ahead of time. You don’t have to have a reason beyond curiosity. You can just walk through, take it in, and be part of it in whatever way feels comfortable.

Maybe that means staying for the music.

Maybe it means chatting with a vendor.

Maybe it’s watching kids light up at the face painting table.

Maybe it’s just enjoying a sunny afternoon surrounded by people.

And that’s enough.

At its heart, Pride Above the Clouds creates a space where people feel seen and welcomed—but it also becomes something bigger than that. It turns into a place where the whole community can come together, even if just for an afternoon, and share something simple and good.

More smiles.

More conversations.

More moments that remind us why people choose to live here.

We talk a lot about wanting Woodland Park to be a strong community. Events like this are what that actually looks like—not perfect, not complicated, just people showing up and being part of something positive.

Pride Above the Clouds

June 7, 10am-3pm

Memorial Park

So if you’re looking for a reason to get out, enjoy the day, and spend time with neighbors, Pride Above the Clouds is worth your time.

Bring a friend—or just bring yourself.

Walk through. Stay awhile. Take it in.

You might leave with nothing more than a smile and a good impression.

And honestly, that’s a pretty great way to spend a day in the mountains.
