Birthday bash promises ‘monumental’ family fun

The community is invited to a high octane birthday party that promises to take the cake.

The first-ever Monumental Birthday Bash will be held from 5-10 p.m., on June 4 in Limbach Park. The free, family fun event will honor the town’s incorporation in 1879 and highlight the community’s 147-year history. Two music acts top the entertainment roster, and food trucks will be available. No alcohol will be served.

Monument Mayor Mitch LaKind will address the approximately 1,000 partygoers expected to attend. The Monument-based Tall Boy Marketing and the Colorado Springs-based Salt Creek Productions are hosting the event in cooperation with the Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Monument.

The Murfreesboro, Tenn.-based Joey Fletcher Band will kick off the show. Fletcher is a southern rock/slide guitarist whose passion for the blues and dynamic on-stage performance drive a party to the next level.

“Joey is a slide guitar virtuoso who has played with some major acts through the years,” said TBM President Justin Styll.

Local award-winning band Wirewood Station will keep the music going with their melodic foot-stomping, hand-clapping repertoire. The group got its name from the way it honors the wire of their strings and wood of their instruments. Band members are violinist Michelle Edwards, guitarist Eric Blackmore, bassist James Dikes and drummer Mark Worthington.

The band earned “Best Acoustic Band” honors for their Rocky Mountain Music Festival performance, and Gazette readers voted them “Best Band in Colorado Springs.” Fox 21 Newscaster Craig Coffey described the band as “Energy Rocky Mountain talent that leaves audiences cheering for more.”

“Year in year out they are voted best band in the Springs, and they bring the biggest crowds to our free Wednesday night concerts in the park,” Styll said. “Ironically, they were not able to make a Wednesday work this year, so this will be the only time this summer to see them for free at Limbach Park.”

A variety of lip-smacking foodstuff will be available as will a playground for the adventurous child.

“The park is connected to an amazing playground for kids,” Styll said. “Since there will be no alcohol, we will not need fences between the playground and concert area. They will be connected like on the Wednesday night concerts.”

No birthday celebration is complete without cake and this event is no exception.

“There will surely be cake, but how much or what size remains to be determined,” Styll said. “There will be some surprises for sure.”

Styll has more than three decades of marketing experience having worked in craft beer, sports talk radio and live events in Nashville, Tenn. His business partner, Eric du Toit, SCP, is helping execute the celebration.

“We shared the same enthusiasm for great-sounding live music and well-produced events,” Styll said. “We had been looking for a reason to put on an event the past few summers and were never able to make it work with both of us having to travel a lot for work. When the opportunity for the birthday bash presented itself… it was a no brainer.”

Styll said bringing in a touring act from Nashville had been considered. During discussions with Monument Town Manager Madeline VanDenHoek, someone suggested holding a community birthday bash. Everyone seized the opportunity to help bring the event to fruition, he said.

“We’re not doing this to make money. We’re doing this because we love this town and want to give back in the ways that we know how to,” he said. “I can’t explain how fantastic the TM and the TLCC have been to work with.”

In a May 1 email, Styll said everyone involved with planning for the event is delighted for its debut.

“While our great nation turns 250-years old and Colorado turns 150, our beloved town of Monument turns 147,” Styll said. “We’re celebrating all that hometown spirit with a day full of fun, food, live music and even a few surprises.”

Styll said he hopes the event evolves into an annual celebration. Plans for a 150-year special event in 2029 are being discussed.

“The people of Monument love this town. With this being our first event, we want to give them (community) an event they are proud of and look forward to every year,” Styll said. “We want to celebrate our town with our neighbors who live in it, and introduce our town to people who may not be familiar with Monument.”
