Home school students talk history

After hours of research about an historical figure whose life looked intriguing to home-school students in Teller County, each read their essays to parents and friends.

In a potluck gathering April 8, students from 9 to 12 years old showed their intellectual and social skills during a presentation of  “Classical Conversations.”

For the audience, many of the characters were not mainstream but rather the result of students’ curiosity.

Titled “Faces of History,” the students studied and wrote about men and women who lived between 548 A.D. and 1965, beginning with Theodora and concluding with William Branham.

“We teach them to write and express themselves,” said Meghan Engdahl, who tutors the Essentials Program for the Classical Conversations. “We want the students to choose people who are interesting and exciting to them.”

For the evening’s presentation, the students dressed as their characters might and each crafted an appropriate centerpiece for the tables.

The students meet once a week as part of their home school curriculum.

The students who spoke: Rose Farris, Evie Engdahl, Harry Orr, Elijah Vassalotti, Krysia Wnukowski, Conrad Rogers, Gabe Engdahl, Magnus Scott and Xzavier De Los Reyes.
