Participants sought for this year’s bed races

The raciest race in the west is seeking racy racers.

The Old Homestead Museum Board is seeking racers for the 7th Annual Pearl DeVere Day Bed Races, which will be held on June 6 along Cripple Creek’s Myers Avenue.

Organizers say this year’s event will have some “exciting changes.” Among those are racing categories: General public, casinos, news media, or first responders/military.

Each team has three members – one “Pearl” and two “Johns.” Pearl will ride on the bed with one John, while the Johns take turns pushing, one john will push the bed to the turnaround point, change pushers, and return to the start/finish line. Teams need not be two males and a female, but one member will be designated as Pearl and two will be Johns.

Myers Avenue was the heart of Cripple Creek’s “red-light district” during its gold camp heyday. It’s still the location of the Old Homestead, which was built in 1896 and was the district’s most elegant brothel. Since 1958, the house has been operated as a museum.

“Teams can do costumes if they want, share your pride, do period, create a theme whatever works for you,” organizers said in a press release. “There will be a separate contest for “Classy Madame,” start figuring out that costume, just remember our house was not a cheap place so you need to truly think classy and beautiful.”

Entry Fee is $30 per team if you make your own bed. The entry fee is $40 if you use one of the organization’s beds. If you register before May 23, early bird prices of $25 and $35 respectively will apply. There is a $5 entry fee for Classy Madame.

“There are no set specifications for the bed, just remember you will be pushing it on Cripple Creek Street, so take into consideration the weight, ease of handling around corners and durability,” the press release said.

Each heat will be timed. The fastest time from all heats will be declared the overall winner. The number of heats will be determined by the number of entries. Email ohomesteadhouse@gmail.com or call 719-689-2485 for registration form.

UCCS playing the name game again | From the Editor

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs is thinking about changing its name. Again. This has been a long, strange journey. Established in 1965 as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, the school has long been know as UCCS. It’s established, it’s known and it’s the only UCCS in the United States.
