Pikes Peak area zoo voted as 2nd-best zoo in U.S. in USA Today awards

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo ended up ranking second place in votes for ‘best zoo in the country’ in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

This is the second year in a row that the zoo has received its highest ranking ever, second place. As well as this ranking, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo also earned second place for ‘Best Zoo Membership’ and second place for ‘Best Zoo Exhibit’ for Rocky Mountain Wild, which is home to animals native to the Rocky Mountain region.

USA Today’s 10Best is a readers’ choice awards program that highlights the best in destinations, food and drink, hotels, and things to do. An expert panel selects their top picks for each category and readers vote to determine the ten winners.

“This is a remarkable year for us,” said Bob Chastain, president and CEO of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, in a press release. “We’re excited to celebrate 100 years of growth in animal care, conservation education and community. Later this year, we’ll open the International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe, and being recognized by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards is a reflection of our community’s dedication and passion. Every day, our supporters inspire us to keep pushing for excellence, and moments like this help remind us why we do what we do. We’re grateful to everyone who makes Cheyenne Mountain Zoo such a special place for the community. Thanks for your ongoing support.”

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo features daily keeper talks and animal demonstrations, special events, small-group tours, camps, and more.

This year marks Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s 100th anniversary. In its centennial year, the zoo will be making historic upgrades to its giraffe herd’s home. The upgrades will include a 12,000 square-foot International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe and 25 percent expansion to their outdoor space.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska took first place as the best zoo in the U.S.

New historic marker initiative allows Coloradans to propose landmarks

Colorado residents will soon have a say in what will be Colorado’s next landmarks across the state. The “America 250-Colorado 150 Commission,” an initiative celebrating America’s 250 years of independence and Colorado’s 150 years of statehood, announced a new Historic Marker Program. Through the program, “local organizations, historians, and residents” can propose historic markers for […]
