Community members gathered at the Norris-Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs recently for an evening dedicated to supporting veterans through Project Healing Waters, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans heal through outdoor recreation, fly fishing, and the power of community.

The event brought together veterans, community leaders, and local organizations to raise funds and awareness for the Colorado Springs chapter of Project Healing Waters, which provides programs designed to help veterans cope with the physical and emotional challenges that can follow military service. Through guided fly fishing outings, skill-building activities, and strong peer connections, the program offers veterans an opportunity to reconnect with nature and with one another.

One of the evening’s highlights included recognition of Judge David Shakes, who helped lead the Veterans Trauma Court in Colorado’s 4th Judicial District. Shakes has supported veterans facing the difficult transition from military service to civilian life. Now retired, Shakes continues to serve veterans as a volunteer with Project Healing Waters.

The program was emceed by KOAA News5’s Diane Derby, who helped guide the evening and highlight the importance of community involvement in supporting local veterans.

Among those attending were members of the Tri-Lakes Lions Club, who turned out in strong support of the event and its mission. The club has long been committed to serving the community through charitable initiatives and volunteer service. Supporting organizations that assist veterans is an important part of that commitment.

“Service is at the heart of what Lions do,” Curtis Jack, club president said . “When we see organizations like Project Healing Waters making a difference in the lives of veterans, we want to be part of that effort.”
