Fossil Beds host Bird Count Feb. 14
Friends of the Fossil Beds sponsors The International Great Backyard Bird Count from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.
The event includes a bird scavenger hunt, bird charades and bingo and beak matching. In addition to making pinecone bird feeders, participants are invited to do bird walks with Joe LaFleur, Woodland Park resident and columnist for the Pikes Peak Courier.
Walkers will count bird and collect data which will be sent to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Birds Canada. The data will be used to help determine such things as the effect of climate change on various species.
Admission to the event is $10 for those who don’t have a national park pass.
The event is in coordination with the three-day International Great Backyard Bird County from Feb. 13-16 in places all over the world. Children under the age of 15 are free.
