Two Florissant firefighters receive special recognition
During the summer, Florissant Fire Protection District deployed some of their members to various fires in the state and country. Crews were sent to the Meeker area to fight the Lee and Elk fires during the summer of 2025. Both fires broke out Aug. 2.
The Lee Fire was a record-setting event in Colorado. It grew to become the fourth-largest fire in the state’s history, reaching over 137,000 acres. Concurrently, the Elk Fire ramped up a few miles away, reaching nearly 15,000 acres.
Florissant Firefighters Mike Lucarelli and Chloe Sebring received a letter of appreciation from the Rio Blanco County Sheriff along with a Medal of Valor, both presented by Fire Chief John Buchan during the department’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Jan. 17. The dinner recognized the dedication and service of all its volunteers following a record-breaking year for the district.
Nearly 60 people attended the event, which featured a potluck dinner, gifts, promotions, and the presentation of awards honoring outstanding service and commitment throughout 2025.
