D-38 classes resume after one-day pause for possible threat

Classes resumed in Lewis-Palmer District 38 on Wednesday, a day after all district schools were closed because of a potential threat.

District 38 said on its website that there was “no credible threat or elevated risk” moving ahead, and that it was safe for the schools to reopen.

Officials said to expect extra police presence at the school the rest of the week to reassure the community — not because of any continued threats.

District 38 announced on Monday afternoon that all of its schools would be closed on Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution.”

In a statement sent out to district families and staff, D-38 communications director Amy Matisek said that law enforcement informed administration of a potential risk involving Monument-area schools.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said it received information about a threat involving district-area schools, although a specific school was not identified. The Sheriff’s Office was the lead agency, working with the Monument and Colorado Springs police departments.

Students at Lewis-Palmer High School and Palmer Ridge High School are expected to have adjusted exam schedules on Wednesday and Thursday.

Community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement, school administrators, or through Safe2Tell at safe2tell.org or 877-542-7233.
