From traffic warnings to the real thing, Green Mountain Falls Marshal Sean Goings is on the spot when drivers exceed the speed limits. After 30 days of warnings, Goings is catching speeders in the act.

“For that first month we gave out 156 warnings for speeding past the park,” Goings said in a report Dec. 2 to Mayor Todd Dixon and trustees Sunde King, Brandy Moralez and John Bell.  (Sean Ives was absent).  “That cost us $2,000 in revenue we weren’t getting but we still had to process the paperwork.  But Meta Traffic decided to waive that $2,000 off of our bill.”

Now that the warning period is over, Goings and Deputy Marshal Marvin Beswick advanced from issuing 5 tickets a day to 25 in one day, he said.

“We’ve issued 135 citations since we started,” he added. “Hopefully, we’ll see some reduction in speed.”

The cops were even out during the holiday weekend. 

“On Thanksgiving, we had 17 speeders, the day after, 20, Saturday, we had 19, Sunday, 31,” Goings said.

The camera costs the town $1,500 a month.

“It’s a slow-moving process; I have three days to approve it, Meta has 30 days to set it up and the driver has 30 days to pay,” Goings said.  “It goes to court after that. Hopefully, we will see some reduction in speed within our town limits because it’s been a little bit ridiculous.”

When it comes to putting cameras on the town’s portion of US 24, Goings expects to see results next year.

“There have been discussions about when do we start citing people, whether it’s 20 miles an hour over, 15? 10? ” he said. “I can tell you that CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) is all in favor of giving speeding tickets. They said ’10 over, 20 over, you should write them a ticket.’”

Goings reported that he has begun the approval process with CDOT and the Colorado State Patrol.

“A lot of these have been approved, so it’s probably something we can look forward to,” he said.

In other business,

● The board approved taxing the owners of short-term rentals $4.50 a night, per room, while occupied but delayed a decision on doing site visits.

● The board approved the proposed budget of $1,310,645.75. “Our sales taxes were up by 30% his year; a lot of it had to do with the events and Green Box Arts,” said the town manager, Caleb Patterson.

Dixon and the board went into executive session to discuss the purchase, acquisition, lease, transfer, or sale of any real, personal, or other property interest.
