A former Monument Academy teacher charged with first-degree murder after fatally stabbing one person and injuring two others told police it was in self-defense, court documents obtained by The Gazette show.

Matthew Regnier, 33, claimed the three people who lived with him carried out a “three on one” assault, and each person had intentions to harm several specified areas of his body for a reason he was unsure of.

After hearing this, the Colorado Springs police detective interviewing Regnier told him the video he took and physical evidence at the scene do not support his claim, according to court documents.

Two 911 calls came from the 1400 block of North El Paso Street on Friday with one from a victim reporting a domestic disturbance and the other from Regnier about 8 minutes later, claiming he had been attacked.

Police arrived minutes after midnight to find three people stabbed and Regnier bloodied, holding a child, court documents stated.

Regnier is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of criminal attempt of murder, three counts of first-degree assault and child abuse.

The deceased has been identified as Raymundo Medina-Cabrera, 31.

Patty Jewett neighborhood resident Lisa Blanot said the stabbing is the first major incident that’s happened in the neighborhood in recent years. Living in her home for around 30 years, Blanot said other incidents that have happened weren’t nearly to the “same degree,” either.

Blanot and other neighbors said the area typically stays quiet and peaceful aside from the regular cars that pass through the busy road of El Paso Street. The morning after Halloween, she said she saw police officers and yellow tape outside her window.

“We don’t have a ton of that (crime) around, so, as soon as we saw that yellow tape, I knew that something was going on,” she said.
