‘House on Haunted Hill’ a fresh spin on a horror classic
The Funky Little Theater Company is leaning into the spooky season with a modern take on a classic horror film.
“The House on Haunted Hill,” a play written by Tommy Jamerson, is an adaptation of the 1959 film starring horror icon Vincent Price. In the movie, Price, who lent his distinctive voice and chilling laugh to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” plays an eccentric millionaire who invites a group of strangers to a birthday party in an allegedly haunted house. Each guest is promised $10,000 if they can stay in the house for the entire night.
A remake of the film, starring Geoffrey Rush and Famke Janssen, was released in 1999.
“(Jamerson) thought there were some plot holes in the original film,” said Chris Medina, Funky’s artistic director. “And he wanted to take the liberty of fixing them.”
The production will take place at Palmer Lake’s Town Hall, the latest home for the itinerant theater company. Since opening in 2014, the 20-member company has worked in several locations, including Woodland Park, Cripple Creek, and numerous venues in and around Colorado Springs, Medina said.
“We’re kind of living a nomadic lifestyle, popping up where we want to,” he said. “We love Palmer Lake, but we’re ready for our own home again.”
“The House on Haunted Hill” will be filled with the campy, humorous twists and surprises that longtime patrons have come to expect, according to Medina.
“We’re leaning into the classic version (of the movie), because that’s what the play is based on,” he said.
“But there’s a little bit of camp, there’s a little bit of humor, there’s a little bit of suspense. There’s a little bit of everything. That’s what we’re known for. Our loyal patrons who come to show after show, location after location, tell us that’s what they like best about our shows.”
Solomon Abell, who directs the production, said the play is not for small children, but teens with an affinity for horror movies will enjoy it.
“It’s going to be fun, and campy, and there will be blood,” Abell said. “It’s going to be a good time.”
