Councilmember behavior raises concerns | Guest Column

Warren Dickenson

I am writing to express my concern regarding recent actions by City Councilman Jeffrey Geer, specifically his conduct on social media, which I believe violates the city’s Charter. Public officials, in accordance with the City Charter Article IV Section 3.14 are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct in order to uphold public trust and confidence. His recent statements and actions have not only spread misinformation but have also demonstrated active advocacy against the Woodland Park School District and Merit.

It is disheartening to see an elected official in our community use his position to target these institutions publicly, engaging in what appears to be a personal agenda rather than a professional and impartial representation of his constituents. The Article IV of the City of Woodland Park Charter is in place to guide the City and its officers and employees. When these guidelines are disregarded, it risks undermining public trust and tarnishes the integrity of our local government.

The statements and allegations that Councilman Geer has spread on social media have caused unnecessary division within our community, misleading residents and creating tension between various stakeholders, including educators, students, parents, and residents. The multiple instances of calling at least 1/3rd of this community “parasites” and “cancerous tumors” as well as outright stating he doesn’t care about “legal definitions” is completely unacceptable. The City and its officials are to be committed to complete honesty, utmost integrity, fair dealing, and ethical behavior as the basis of its businesses, operators, and services to the community.

Councilmember Geer’s actions are in direct conflict with the City Charter. As such, I respectfully request that the City Council and the City of Woodland Park take appropriate action to address Councilman Geer’s actions.

It is worth noting that all elected officials in Woodland Park represent our community at all times. As a volunteer in the City Council it is imperative that all actions by a council member reflect the values and character of this great community. I would ask you to consider what image these divisive actions project to potential residents or business owners considering Woodland Park as a home.

It is my hope that under your leadership, the city can reaffirm its commitment to transparent, respectful communication, regardless if by official or personal means, from all elected officials. I am confident that the City of Woodland Park will take necessary steps to ensure that our representatives uphold their duties with integrity and accountability.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to seeing a resolution that prioritizes the unity and well-being of our community.
