Cripple Creek’s historic Butte Opera House Theater has announced its 2024 professional season opening in June and continuing through December. The season also offers a few surprises with music and comedy, along with Friends of the Butte-sponsored community productions.
According to Butte Theater Manager Zack Sztanyo, this year’s summer melodrama and musical shows will be produced by Chameleon Arts and Entertainment, based out of Colorado Springs.
“Chameleon Arts and Entertainment is a reputable company with individual history at the Butte Theater and Cripple Creek,” Sztanyo said. “Not only are its members experienced actors, but they are also well-versed in the unique genre of melodrama. Their expertise in this area ensures that our community will be treated to high-quality performances that resonate with our audiences.”
The melodrama, “Darling of the Donkey Derby,” will open up the summer season in June, following with the musical “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” opening in July. For the fall musical and Christmas melodrama, the Butte welcomes the return of the Thin Air Theatre Company to produce either “Spamalot” or “Little Shop of Horrors” beginning Sept. 27 and “Miracle on Mistletoe Mountain” Nov. 29.
“TATC has a proven track record of delivering exceptional theatrical experiences, and I am confident that their involvement will elevate the Butte Theater’s offerings and attract audiences from near and far,” Sztanyo said. “As we strive to provide diverse and enriching cultural experiences for residents and visitors, these partnerships with Chameleon Arts & Entertainment and Thin Air aligns perfectly with our goals. Their productions will not only entertain but also contribute to the cultural vibrancy of our city.”

“The Butler Did It” opens March 29
The Friends of the Butte Theater 2024 community season continues with the March 29 opening of “The Butler Did It,” directed by Terri McClintock and starring an ensemble cast of actors from throughout the region.
According to FOBT Board President Robert Taglia, “The Butler Did It” is a comedy that parodies every English theater mystery play ever written. But has a decidedly American flair. A society dowager with a reputation for clever weekend parties invites a group of detective writers to her manor where they must personify their fictional characters, assuming the personalities of their lead characters. Laughs collide with thrills as the true killer is unmasked and almost everyone turns out to be someone else.
“It’s a huge show featuring a cast of 10 and it’s hilarious,” Taglia said.
Following its opening weekend on Mar. 29, the show continues for both evening and matinee performances through April 14. The ticket cost is $16 and supports theater endeavors in Cripple Creek.
Cripple Creek’s Got Talent
In addition to community theater, FOB has another opportunity for local talent to participate and compete in Cripple Creek’s Got Talent, a local favorite, on Friday, May 10. All types of acts including musical, drama, dance, storytelling, instrumental, and more are invited to perform and compete for prize money. Stay tuned for more information regarding tryouts.
