correction

In the article about SSR Cripple Creek & Victor Mining Co. published in the Sept. 3 edition of the Courier, we quoted Tony Matarrese as saying that SSR was in the early stages of restoring the land.

Since that time, the mine reached out to say that, rather than beginning restoration, they are conducting trial studies to confirm what works and what doesn’t. “Concurrent reclamation is not final,” said Kaitlyn Ragsdale, external relations supervisor, in an email.

While the article quotes Matarrese saying that SSR is processing for 10 years beyond the closing period of 2050, Ragsdale clarified the statement. “Our current mine life is 2031 for mining, 2042 for leaching, and 2050 for closure, with a period of monitoring through 2055,” she said in the email. “We have not provided any dates for the A14 extension, as the permit is still under review and nothing is final.”

In a correction to an error in the article, 52% of the 430 employees of company live in Teller County. The wages of the 430 are part of the wages of 1,039 employees across the U.S., which totaled $539 million last year. “Our contributions (CC&V) are $120,302 in 2025 as reported at the time of the open house,” Ragsdale said, referring to the open house at the Butte Theater in Cripple Creek.
