Need stuff hauled away? RollUp has an app for that

For people who need to get rid of furniture, junk, wood piles or anything else, there’s an app for that. The RollUp app offers on-demand moving and haul-away services.

In the gig economy, hauling stuff from one place to another is big business, especially for RollUp, launched in 2022 by Connor and Bella Santana.

Working remotely from their home in Woodland Park, the Santanas developed a roster of people who can pick up and deliver items to another location. The Santanas’ business theme is “have wheels will haul.”

A business that offers opportunities for the customer as well as the hauler, RollUp works on a basis of bidding, something like an auction for people who seek the lowest price, appropriate vehicle and a delivery person who accepts the bid.

Veteran of the U.S. Army who specialized in logistics, Santana got to thinking about the logistics of too much stuff. After a home-renovation project, the Santanas were left with piles of construction material but could not find a hauling service.

A light bulb, however, went off when they spotted a pickup truck in a driveway.

“Why couldn’t we ask someone with a pickup if they’d like to earn money hauling?” he said.

From that idea they collected a range of people who haul, whether in pickups, large trucks, even SUVs, for instance.

“Initially it was just junk removal, but we were trying to help people find a fair market price on the customer side,” he said. “On the hauler side, we wanted to create opportunities for everyone.”

The haul collectors are chiefly owners of hauling companies.

“We have about 45 haulers from Pueblo to Fort Collins, some in Woodland Park,” Santana said. “We have jobs being completed in Colorado as well as three other states.”

Customers and haulers usually connect on Facebook Marketplace while looking for items in Denver, or Aurora, for instance.

“They upload a picture of the item and name the price that they’d pay for delivery,” he said.

Haulers can then bid for the job, based on the customer’s stated budget.

“The app pairs you with a local hauler nearby who can do the hauling at your time and your budget,” he said.

Since opening the business, the Santanas added services such as moving within the same town, cleaning out storage units and picking up and delivering donations.

“Take a picture and upload it,” he said.

Haulers are bonded, insured and have passed a background check.

“Some of them are making a lot of money,” Santana said.
