Fire danger grounds fireworks celebrations in Colorado; Memorial Park, Fort Carson displays still on

The list of communities canceling or postponing Fourth of July fireworks shows because of the extreme heat and fire danger in the state has grown in recent days.
Cañon City, Steamboat Springs, Telluride, Buena Vista, Durango and Silverton all are playing it safe, as is Aspen, which replaced its annual fireworks extravaganza with a drone light show.
Locally, Manitou Springs and Woodland Park on Wednesday canceled their fireworks displays, citing the fire danger. On July 5, Woodland Park will hold its Symphony Above the Clouds with cannons from Fort Carson, but without fireworks. Cripple Creek has also canceled its fireworks display on July 4.
Burn bans have been in effect for weeks in El Paso County and much of Colorado. The bans prohibit campfires, outdoor smoking and cooking and the sale or use of fireworks. The stands that normally pop up on the outskirts of Colorado Springs selling sparklers, fountains and other non-explosive fireworks that are illegal in Colorado Springs are absent this year because of the county’s ban.
Colorado Springs’ annual fireworks show in Memorial Park, which follows a performance of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, is still on, and organizers are confident it will be safe.
“We are a go,” said Nathan Newbrough, president and CEO of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. “Until the professionals tell us we are not, we are on.”
The Summer Symphony is months in the making and “the preparation is so rigorous that I cannot imagine that fireworks will not take place,” he said. “Safety is our number one concern, hands down.”
The philharmonic has been in contact daily with the Colorado Springs Fire Department, coordinating the massive firefighter presence on the Fourth of July, Newbrough said.
“Fireworks take off over Prospect Lake and will be monitored very vigorously over the evening,” he said. “You could say this is probably the safest fireworks display anywhere around.”
The AAA Sky Sox baseball team also is planning to go ahead with its Independence Day Fireworks Spectacular at Security Service Field, with the same precautions it takes whenever it shoots off fireworks, said team spokesman Shane Philipps.
On game day, the fire marshal tours the area around the stadium and gives the thumbs up or down, he explained.
“If everything checks out, he writes a permit, green-lighting the show,” Philipps said. And so far this season, none of the fireworks shows have had to be canceled.
Fort Carson also said Wednesday it still plans to end its Freedom Fest with fireworks at 9:15 p.m. Sunday.
